Mark Bradford

If you don’t know who this is yet get to know him. This link is to his work featured at the museum of contemporary art Chicago.  I first came across an image of his work a few months ago and it stuck in my head and here I found him in Chicago.  Plus he has a painting titled Method Man so he’s got to be good.

martin kippenberger-food for thought

Lets remember 1983 for a moment,
I was only four years old and
Martin Kippenberger was doing his thing.

Here is a little bit about this piece posted by The Saatchi Gallery, this is “one of the earliest and most important series of Kippenberger’s works. It is a series of twelve paintings that Kippenberger commissioned to be made for him by the film poster painter known as ‘Mr Werner’. The delegation of the making of this series of paintings to another is not only a clear dig at the earnestness and supposed ‘authenticity’”

George Condo/ Nick Van Woert/ Me

George Condo; Mental States

We are always borrowing one thing from another.  Condo calls his painting Lady Crimp his “fake old masters”making reference to his borrowing of historical references for his work.  Nick Van Woert, recently featured in Modern Painters, takes part in the historical thievery or “hijacking” as he calls it. Haruspex shows how Woert connects the historical with his vision.

Salaam, created just a few months ago, along with three other similar paintings done around the same time, are blended and mashed in the same similar manner as Condo and Woert.  The imagery is taken from photography used in advertisement for products and clothing lines.  This practice of borrowing, “hijacking” or faking with materials from the past or the present is common in the arts.  Richard Prince and the reproductions of the Marlboro Men advertisements is yet another example of stealing images and taking ownership of them. Making it new by making it again.

A new direction but closed for now

These new paintings of mine are very different from the way I have been working in the past.  First off they are done with acrylics.  I think the last time I used acrylic paint, aside house paint, was back in college.  Painting with acrylic took a little getting used to.  I have been painting with oils for the past eight years now and they behave quite differently.  This was exciting and a little frustrating.  Exciting because the process was certainly not a linear one and frustrating because of the limits comparatively to the use of oils.  This is one of those moments when frustration breathes a new life into the creative process.

I also have been utilizing this new technique of mine that I accidentally created.  It is an image transfer using a screen printing techniques and a little rubbing.
